Study: Cell Phone Radiation Causes Behavioral Problems in Mice

A team of researchers from the Yale School of Medicine in New Haven, Connecticut, has found a link between radiation from mobile phones and behavioral anomalies among offspring of pregnant mice. The study, led by Dr. Hugh Taylor, a professor at the school, consisted of having a two groups of pregnant mice. The control group had a cell phone placed on top of its cage that is turned off. The experimental group had a similar phone on top of its cage that was turned on. The purpose of the study was to find out if there are any effects of the radio frequency waves on the offspring of pregnant mice.

The team observed that the offspring of the mice that were exposed to the radiation displayed behavioral problems. They were more hyperactive and reduced memory capacity, and ran around the cage more compared to the offspring from the control group. The mice also exhibited more problems the longer they were exposed to the radiation. “We have shown that behavioral problems in mice that resemble ADHD are caused by cell phone exposure in the womb,” said Dr. Taylor. “The rise in behavioral disorders in human children may be in part due to fetal cellular telephone irradiation exposure.”

Dr. Taylor said that their findings do not necessarily translate to humans, stating that more investigation would be required. But the team advised pregnant women nonetheless to keep their cell phones away from their bodies, especially the abdominal area.

Cell phone use in pregnancy may cause behavioral disorders in offspringExposure to radiation from cell phones during pregnancy affects the brain development of offspring, potentially leading to hyperactivity, Yale School of Medicine researchers have determined. The results, based on studies in mice, are published in the March 15 issue of Scientific Reports, a Nature publication.

There have been questions about this study. Another more current review by the UK’s Health Protection Agency states that there is no evidence linking mobile phone radiation with cancer. The truth is, I’m not sure what to believe. There are political forces that we don’t see behind the scenes that skew any review or study one way or the other.

I think it only makes sense that if the radiation affects mice it will also affect other biological species including humans, to some extent. Haven’t there been other studies before that link behavioral problems among children with their use of mobile phones?

This cell phone radiation issue continues to drag on for years. Which is just the way the wireless industry wants it. Study after study has come out over the years that point to biological effects from exposure to the microwave signals from mobile phones. When will it ever come to the point where someone says there is enough evidence for us to do something?

Mice and humans are different, so what holds true to them do not necessarily translate to pregnant women. Mice are smaller creatures and so any effects of the mobile radiation on them would be a lot more apparent. Still this study is food for thought.
